Preparing your home for summer

The hot season has stepped in a little earlier than expected. But it is never too late to get a nice set of curtains that liven up your rooms while blocking the harsh sun.

If you live in a house with balconies, half of the problem is already solved as the sun doesn’t directly hit your walls and windows. However, in places where it does, here’s what you can do.

Assess your house:

If your bedroom or living room is sunny and hot, opt for blackout curtains. These are thick curtains that can completely cut out light from your bedroom.

Access your comfort:

If you do not wish to use a blackout cloth, try curtains with lining. Closely woven cottons are a good option. The lining will also protect your curtains from getting faded due to sunlight.

Remember the season:

Pastel colours and shades of white reflect sunlight, whereas, darker shades such as black, green or red absorb heat. Lighter the curtain colours, cooler will be your home! Also, some fabrics are better at keeping the sun out. Cotton is best suitable for summer. Velvet is also a good option because of its thickness, but it is heavy and difficult to maintain.

Curtains have a double role in every house – cutting the sun and adding zing to your décor. Depending on how smartly your home has been designed, you can choose the curtain style you need!
